"Madam President, I wish to raise an issue which seems to be taboo in the EU institutions, and that is the issue of colonisation. I am talking about colonies held by EU Member States, for example Britain and France, which between them have dozens of colonies around the world, two of them in my own country, Cyprus, yet these people have no democratic rights to elect a government to govern them. Most of them are governed by governors appointed, for example, by the Queen of England. Every time I ask Mrs Ferrero-Waldner or anybody else in the Commission, they close their eyes, they close their mouths and their ears and give no proper answer. Madam Commissioner, I challenge you to answer here today: Do you approve of EU Member States having colonies in the world in the 21st century?"@en1
