"After four years of trying to change the Working Time Directive, the Council of Ministers succeeded in agreeing on a common position last summer. The Council’s agreement contains an opt-out option, which allows the social partners to deviate from the weekly working hours laid down in the directive. In this way, the Swedish model of collective agreements is protected. This is also fully in line with the principle of subsidiarity, the idea behind which being that decisions should be taken as near to citizens as possible. The intention of Parliament’s proposal is to exclude this opt-out option. I therefore voted against it."@en1
