"I was sure that the vote would go in favour of Christa Prets’s report. I believe that we need media literacy so that those receiving information can gain a better understanding of all the media products available and find out how to avoid the possible negative effects they have. However, to be able to this, they need the information and knowledge which media literacy offers. All members of the community must be able to look for and use information so that they can communicate freely and openly, without any fear of facing a reality for which they are not prepared. Measures should be implemented even at primary school level to ensure that adequate media literacy is provided so that children acquire the skill sets required to take an active part in society. Media literacy involves offering members of the community the opportunity to analyse mass media products critically so that they become less vulnerable to those who control information."@en1
