"Equal opportunity for women and men is an important part of the Copenhagen criteria. Countries in the Balkans have much work to do in this area. Candidate countries should strive to make their antidiscrimination and gender equality laws equal to those of the acquis communautaire. Issues that require special attention in the Balkans include: increasing health care, increasing the representation of women in government, protecting women from domestic violence, eliminating sex crimes, and implementing stronger antidiscrimination strategies. These problems certainly exist within the EU Member States as well. We should constantly be striving for better equality between women and men. But candidate states have to pay special attention to rectifying these problems before it is possible for them to join the European Union."@en1
