"Mr President, Commissioner, the European Commission has proposed the allocation of EUR 90 million from the Community budget for a scheme where every child aged between 6 and 10 will receive one portion of fruit or vegetables every week.
I would urge Member States to expand this scheme and its associated financing, both at European and national level, so that all children, including those of pre-school age, can receive a portion of fruit every day. I hope that we will all approve the increase in the budget to EUR 500 million. I welcome the fact that the scheme must only involve fresh fruit and vegetables produced in the European Union. They should be seasonal and come from local, organic farming.
I would like to present a similar initiative launched by the Romanian Government back in 2003, whereby all children in pre-school and primary education receive a glass of milk and a fresh roll every school day. Introducing a proper diet for children of school and pre-school age is part of the health education we need to provide for the younger generation."@en1
