"Mr President, a detailed explanation of the circumstances surrounding the death of Mr Julio Soto in Maracaibo must be provided. I would like to convey my condolences to his family. We call for the perpetrators of this crime to be properly tried and punished. The observations and comments made by Human Rights Watch merit our attention, especially as this is an independent organisation that does not receive subsidies from any quarter. We wish to protest against the ban on the activities of this organisation. We call for full respect for freedom of expression in the media and freedom of association. We call for full implementation of the legislation to protect women against violence. We call for the November elections to be run in such a way as to ensure that there can be no reservations about the conduct of the election campaign or about the election process itself. Venezuela should be a democratic country where people enjoy the same degree of freedom as they do in each of the Member States of the European Union."@en1
