"Mr President, the issue we are discussing today, as you can see, unites rather than divides us in the European Parliament. We are discussing the issue of how to do our citizens a favour, and make the vehicles we use as environmentally friendly as possible.
The document we are debating is by no means perfect. It is full of compromises, which are probably a necessity at this stage of the debate. But it is undoubtedly a step in the right direction. It encourages in particular public vehicle users – local and central government authorities – to purchase environmentally-friendly vehicles. This is the great value of this directive, but more likely than not, as in many matters we have discussed in this House on road and transport safety, it is just the beginning, and not the end of the debate."@en1
