"In matters relating to cross-border marriages it is important that there is a standardised legal situation in Europe. Legal certainty for citizens in areas such as marriage and divorce, which often involve highly emotional issues, is increasingly important in areas of policy.
In a world which is shrinking at an ever increasing speed, regulations such as those already in place in civil law, in this case the free choice of applicable law and court for the parties, is important for their mobility. This regulation also establishes ‘user-friendly’ access to an area of family law. Another important factor in this context is that the parties are well-informed about the legal consequences of their decision. This is why I have voted in favour of the report."@en1
