"Madam President, trade unions are losing their rights to negotiate better pay and conditions for their members. Governments are prevented from legislating to improve the lives of workers.
I agree with my colleagues here today, that a binding social progress clause inserted in the EU Treaties is the minimum requirement needed to ensure that this does not happen.
Yet, Mr Andersson’s report does not go to the heart of the matter. It could be strengthened by several amendments. The European Court of Justice rules in accordance with the Treaties. As long as the Treaties allow for restrictions on workers’ rights and the lowering of pay and conditions, the Court of Justice cannot rule otherwise."@en1
