"The people of Europe, along with the vast majority of Members, are extremely concerned by the state of the economy and the evident fragility of our banking sector. Where is the security for our jobs, savings and pensions? European citizens, far from being ‘united in diversity’, as the EU motto goes, are instead frightened in adversity and will look on this vote with incredulity.
With this report, Parliament has indulged in some unfruitful navel-gazing and is throwing out all our good work. Parliament’s powers that be regularly tear at their hair, asking why European citizens cannot give Parliament its due. It appears that they have decided that symbols and anthems will solve the problem.
I suggest that if some Members focused less on carpets and Beethoven and more on carrying out Parliament’s real work, we would not have to ask for voters’ trust."@en1
