"I could not vote in favour of the Carnero report but did not wish to give support to a Eurosceptic point of view either. I am wholeheartedly in favour of the European Union. The party of which I am president is founded on the principle that Scotland should be an independent nation – and we believe that that Independence should be taken up as a free Member State of the EU. Nevertheless, I do not believe that there is any great desire on the part of the people of Europe for the Union to take on the trappings of a super-state. The symbols of the EU were enshrined within the EU Constitution – and that document was rejected in France and the Netherlands. The symbols were then omitted from the Lisbon Treaty which was, nevertheless, rejected in Ireland. If Europe wants to re-engage with its citizens it must bring forward policies which matter to the people – and not play around with meaningless symbols which are completely devoid of substance."@en1
