"I support effective control of energy prices. The price volatility of recent months is clearly not in the interests of European Union citizens, while speculators/intermediaries make profits. What is more, we are seeing an absolutely unacceptable situation where energy prices are determining the prices of food. We cannot quietly accept the cynical argument that there is enough food on a global scale but not everyone has enough money to buy expensive food.
In the opinion of World Bank experts, biomass energy is responsible for up to 80% of the sharp increase in food prices. In this context I have stressed, on many occasions, the need to increase food reserves and to regulate the use of food sources for energy purposes. This is a key problem related to food price control, and as such must be given much more specific attention."@en1
