". Illegal logging and deforestation are causing serious damage to the environment, and there is general agreement that the clearance of sensitive tropical forests must be reduced. Junilistan is therefore favourably disposed to the idea that individual states should draw up codes of conduct on the import of tropical timber. We also welcome labelling initiatives, for example through the Forest Stewardship Council, which would give consumers more scope for taking conscious decisions based on facts regarding the purchase of timber or timber products. Unfortunately, the salient feature of this report is its manifest desire to advance the positions of the European Parliament on matters concerning forestry policy in general. Junilistan is firmly of the view that a common forestry policy within the framework of EU cooperation is not desirable. Instead, responsibility for questions relating to or associated with the forestry policies of individual Member States should remain at national level. In view of these considerations, Junilistan has chosen to vote against the report."@en1
