"On reading this rapport, one question comes to mind: is it because the ‘first generation’ Schengen Information System did not work or was at least ineffective as a means of ensuring security within the Schengen area that a ‘second generation’ system, intended to remedy these shortcomings, is being implemented? Sadly not, as this second-generation system is no more than an updated version of an already flawed system. According to the figures given by the Commission, 400 000 illegal immigrants cross the Union’s borders each year. Even supposing that biometric data will soon be available and ready to use to establish files for and send home illegal immigrants already registered as such, the European Union would be incapable of putting an end to the mass immigration that takes place along its coasts and land borders because of a lack of controls at the Member States’ internal and external borders. The Schengen Information System will only ever be a useless gadget as long as the dangerous Schengen agreements are in place."@en1
