"Mr President, as the EU-India Summit approaches, we ought to reflect on the prospects for increasing cooperation with India. Despite significant progress, our cooperation with India is still significantly less dynamic than our links with China. The Union is India’s main economic partner, but there is still scope for our companies to improve their position in those sectors of the Indian economy that are undergoing dynamic development. I am referring to energy, telecommunications and machinery. At the same time, we must ensure that the prospect of doing business with India does not lead us to overlook the problems facing its population. The most important of these are widespread poverty, the inadequacies of the health and education systems, the AIDS epidemic and the marked social contrasts. As we dispatch politicians, financiers, goods and know-how to India, we must not forget the need for humanitarian aid and medicine. Above all, we must not neglect the cause of religious freedom in India."@en1
