".
I fully support the initiative to amend the legal provisions governing application of the principle of mutual recognition of judgments.
Every effort must be made to render judicial cooperation between Member States as effective as possible. At the same time, we must seek to ensure that all citizen's rights, including the fundamental right to defence in criminal proceedings, are fully preserved.
In my view the proposed amendments will not only considerably facilitate cooperation between courts but will above all help to reinforce the rights of the citizen with respect to the administration of justice throughout the European Union, especially the right of defence and the right to a retrial."@en1
