"− Mr President, it is a good thing that Europe is making its voice heard in this part of Africa which is once again at risk of becoming a theatre for virulent conflict, after the farce of a presidential campaign we witnessed a few days ago. The G8 has also taken a very clear stance, not through the introduction of sanctions, which would have damaged the civilian population in particular, but with ‘financial measures’ that relate especially to companies, banks and personalities of the regime in power since 1980. The situation that has come about is unacceptable, with elections taking place in inappropriate conditions and amid systematic violence. I also hope that our Community diplomacy will move to support the African Union’s proposal asking for a government of national unity to overcome this difficult crisis."@en1
