". — The rejection of the Lisbon Treaty in the Irish referendum is a setback that should stimulate serious thought in European institutions and in the governments of Member States. What was the cause? Who failed in their duties? Does society not understand politicians? Or perhaps it is the politicians who have lost touch with ordinary people? The fault lies both with European institutions and with the governments of individual countries. They failed to provide proper information campaigns. There is a lack of information written in clear and simple language for the average citizen. This shows not just a complete lack of forward planning, but also complete ignorance of social attitudes, as well as the views of citizens of the European Union as regards the Lisbon Treaty. The result of the Irish referendum also shows that there is currently a lack of internal coherence in the EU. The governments of Member States often present themselves as being in opposition to European institutions and blame them for all failures or unpopular decisions. It is all too easy to blame some anonymous European bureaucrats who are not always aware of the situation of the ordinary person. This results in negative attitudes towards the European Union and its institutions. We should put an end to this division into us and them. WE are the European Union!"@en1
