"Statistics show that every year as many as 8 000 pedestrians and cyclists are killed and 300 000 are injured on our roads. These alarming numbers show how important it is to implement a more effective and strict regulation in order to lower the number of deaths of, and injuries to, pedestrians and other road users.
I endorse the rapporteur’s requirement for the timetable for the implementation of the new regulation to be shorter than that proposed by the Commission. There is, for example, the estimated 33 months lead-time for the implementation of BAS (Brake Assist System) for cars, although the implementation process is really fairly simple.
I also agree with the view that it is important to monitor constantly the technical possibilities in the area of safety, with the aim of further increasing the safety of pedestrians and especially cyclists. Last but not least, I am convinced that limiting car traffic in town centres and the use of public transport and bicycles are important indirect ways in which each of us can contribute towards the safety of pedestrians on our roads."@en1
