"ALDE Madam President, several speakers have claimed that there is no scientific evidence – or no evidence at all – to support the choice of the depth limit of 1000 metres. This is not so. In fact, to give you an example, there is scientific evidence from fishing operations at 840 to 1300 metres in the west of Ireland. Carbon-14 dating revealed that the cold-water coral matrix taken as by-catch in this fishery was at least 4550 years old. So there are vulnerable ecosystems – as shown by scientific evidence – at that depth. In addition to using the precautionary principle, I think it is wise to choose to have such a limit."@en1
