"Madam President, the Belarus regime shows its continued disregard for all the institutional guarantees that are central to a democracy. It curtails the freedom to form and join political parties, the freedom of expression, the right to alternative sources of information and the right to free and fair elections. The arrest of political opponents in Belarus violates all these basic freedoms. The 19th century British politician Benjamin Disraeli once said: ‘No government can be long secure without a formidable opposition’. As Lukashenko stifles all opposition, let us hope that Disraeli’s words prove to be a prophesy for the Belarus regime and that the suppression of the opposition will be the cause of its ultimate downfall."@en1
