"I abstained on the Stubb report on the framework for the activities of lobbyists because I believe that some of my fellow Members are making too much of a fuss over an activity that is as old as mankind, namely the attempt to influence decision-makers. It is normal for citizens to get together to defend their interests. Trade unions, employers’ associations and NGOs have the right to defend their interests to any legislator. The legislator has the duty to listen before making a decision. However, the legislator must remain independent, hence the importance of Members declaring their financial interests. Nevertheless, the report’s main shortcoming is that it remains silent on the funding of certain associations from the EU budget. That is an area where transparency should also come into play."@en1
