"Mr President, when we considered the Treaty of Lisbon in February, both my fellow Members and I proposed that the right to take collective industrial action should belong within the competence of the Member States. Unfortunately, the majority of you voted against this and now the following question must be raised: why did you do it? The only logical explanation and the logical consequence is that the cross-border pursuit of the biggest profits possible by employers will ultimately take precedence over the right of employees to defend themselves against social dumping. You might of course believe this, but you must then stop talking about a social Europe.
Employees in every country must have the unconditional right to take industrial action in order to ensure that migrant workers receive at least the same salaries as themselves. This is not discrimination. We do not believe that migrant workers should have lower salaries than workers who already live in the country. We are against discrimination and action must therefore be taken. The alternative is social dumping. This is a downward spiral. Therefore, using whatever means necessary, we must at least secure the free and unrestricted right to take industrial action through a legally binding protocol in the Treaty of Lisbon."@en1
