Employed in the strawberry fields of Nea Manolada, in the Prefecture of Ilia, Greece, they have been on strike, asking for their daily wage to be increased from the humiliating amount of EUR 23 to EUR 30. Large-scale strawberry growers and their hired thugs attempted to intimidate the foreign workers. In an attempt to forestall a large rally planned by the workers for yesterday in the square of Pyrgos, Ilia Prefecture, the workers’ camps were attacked, shots were fired in the air, and many workers were savagely beaten. We condemn this barbaric attack, to which the police and the legal authorities turned a blind eye. We ask for measures to be taken immediately to protect economic migrants."@en1
