"The recent violence in Tibet has again drawn our attention to the position of the Tibetan people. The situation there regarding missing persons and the dead or wounded is very unclear. China must clarify this and allow international organisations and the media to enter the area. This summer the Olympic Games will be held in China. The Games stand for peace and respect. The Games are an outstanding opportunity for the Chinese people to come into contact with sporting and cultural values from the rest of the world. Athletes have a crucial role to play in this. Governments ought not to interfere at this time in their athletes’ participation in the Games. Athletes can and must decide that for themselves. On the other hand, politicians can distance themselves from the opening festivities. I support the President of the European Parliament’s idea of possibly boycotting the opening ceremony. It is crucial that the Member States act collectively with regard to this matter. The European Parliament must take the initiative in this respect."@en1
