"Mr President, my fellow Member Mrs Jeggle has put forward a good proposal for increasing milk quotas. The case for increasing them and for creating a system of balancing out at EU level is also supported both by the situation on the milk market and by dairy farmers.
In view of this situation, questions must be asked. Why has the European Commission been so slow to react to the need to increase milk quotas? Is it planning to secure the interests and existence of EU producers by setting a minimum price for milk at a level that guarantees a profit for all EU producers and puts an end to purchases below the cost of production? Does the Commission envisage an evening out of the imbalance in milk production between the old and the new Member States?"@en1
