"Mr President, my Hungarian colleague, an MEP from Budapest, has said that even during the years of the Iron Curtain there was cooperation between scientific institutions in Europe, but the truth needs to be told: the Iron Curtain also divided science into two camps in Europe – the Western camp, which developed in the free world and had financial support, and the Eastern camp. It would be good if the European Institute of Technology, which we will establish either today or tomorrow, were not only to provide an opportunity for the European Union to take part in global innovative competition, in the global battle for knowledge, but also to serve to unite these two camps that have been divided by history. I would join with my Polish colleagues who have recommended the city of Wrocław as a location either for the headquarters or for one of the Institute’s departments, and I would like to see the authorities in that city be prepared to invest the money that is so essential for the success of this project."@en1
