"As the coordinator of the Group of the European People’s Party (Christian Democrats) and European Democrats for regional policy, I have high hopes for 2009. Why is that? It is because implementation of these new programmes in all the regions, in all the Member States, has now been under way since 2007. What has transpired? Firstly, we can speak of new cohesion, and the funds are being spent to a greater degree than before on regions and cities, on the Lisbon Strategy, on growth and jobs. It has also transpired that we are performing better in the field of innovation, whilst investment in research and innovation has more than doubled. Indeed, in Ljubljana last week Commissioners Hübner and Potočnik announced very good figures in this regard. Thus we can talk of a quiet revolution in the use of these funds – something that must be publicised. This presents an opportunity to greatly improve communication – to improve communication with citizens in 2009, which is also election year. This is made possible by the thousands of projects being implemented in the various fields of the economy and ecology. Failure to choose this very regional policy, this new cohesion policy, as the spearhead of communication with citizens would be a missed opportunity for the Union."@en1
