"The Szigetköz, lying partly in Austria and Slovakia and the Hungarian stretch of the Danube, is one of the most beautiful areas in Europe. It is an island of biodiversity with its natural features, the wealth of its fauna and flora, its water habitats and the traditional way of life of the people who live there. Unfortunately the flow rate of the river nourishing this region has dropped to danger level over the past decades due to hydrological interference. It is not just in the interests of the area affected but in the interests of Hungary and the entire Union that this unique natural asset is not lost to future generations. We already have good laws, such as the Water Framework Directive, which should in principle protect the region. However for these to be successful they need to be enforced at national and Union level. It would be desirable for Slovakia, regardless of the Nagy-Duna matter, to cooperate with Hungary in stabilising the water supply to this area. I would like to invite you on a tour in this romantic landscape in the Spring, but unfortunately we cannot do it without water, and so we need every possible assistance."@en1
