".
This resolution loses its impact because important amendments relating to the recognition of the Armenian genocide have been rejected by the majority of Members.
I am and will remain in favour of Turkey’s accession to the European Union. However, this accession process has to recognise some historical facts.
Moreover, I am totally opposed to the contradiction that Parliament has now introduced. In paragraph 5 of the resolution of 28 September 2005 it in fact called on Turkey to recognise the Armenian genocide and regarded this admission as a precondition for accession to the European Union. The decision to omit the Armenian genocide from the new resolution is a step backwards and one that I cannot support."@en1
