"Statistics show that the European Union population is aging. Only 35% of the European Union citizens are over 50 years old and only 16% of the European Union population is under 14 years old.
The European Union’s demographic policy is a policy that Europe’s future depends on. The demographic policy should refer to accessible health services and decent pensions for pensioners, measures to increase the birth-rate in all Member States, as well as to decent, stable and well paid jobs. For this reason, I ask the European Commission to develop, together with the Member States, a Community policy and national strategies as regards the demographic policy. The result of such measures will be seen in the next 20-30 years. Social Europe needs all its citizens and, especially, it needs each citizen to be integrated into society and have a decent living. This is why we have to correlate the population protection and development policies with the demographic policies."@en1
