"Italian authorities have informed the Member States of the European Union, through the European Early Warning and Response System, about an outbreak of tropical fever spread by the chikungunya virus in the Emilia-Romagna region. They have reported 197 cases of the tropical virus. Laboratory tests have confirmed that 14% of the total number of ill people have contracted the virus and it has claimed one victim.
Although there is no reason to panic yet, the European Commission must once more take steps to prepare for the possibility of a large epidemic. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, monitoring communicable diseases, notes that favourable climatic conditions allow the virus to spread, in particular in the Mediterranean region. The risk of the virus being transmitted to other European countries is also high. Infected people can initiate new transmission cycles in other regions of the Union."@en1
