"British Conservatives are opposed to the EU Constitution and to the draft EU Reform Treaty. We do not agree with the terms of the draft IGC mandate delivered by the European Council or the text of the draft Treaty published on 5 October.
In the context of the request by the Council for an opinion by the European Parliament on the future composition of the European Parliament, British Conservatives have abstained on the Lamassoure-Severin Report. We have done so because we disagree with the model and methodology proposed by the co-rapporteurs, which we believe is unsustainable in the long term. We also disagree with the call for the election of MEPs on transnational lists.
We also deeply regret the fact that the important historical parity on this issue that existed between the UK, France and Italy has been abandoned. We are nonetheless determined to pursue the best interests of the people of the United Kingdom who we believe are currently numerically under-represented in the European Parliament. These factors have determined our position in voting on this report."@en1
