".
Thank you, Mr President. I, like my voters, think that the EU is too closed and bureaucratic. I therefore welcome the Commission’s proposal, which seeks greater openness and transparency in the institutions’ expenditure. Support for agriculture is a debatable issue. It is therefore important for the citizens to be allowed to see who their taxes are going to and how much. It is regrettable that the committee’s amendments run counter the EU’s role as a transparent institution. The committee’s demand for registration in order to have access to information is a serious infringement of privacy for all citizens, whether they are a farmer, a journalist or a pre-school teacher. Permitting registration of citizens who wish to consult public documents is a development we do not want to see in the EU. I therefore urge all members to vote against Amendments 4 and 23 from the committee. Thank you."@en1
