"I voted in favour of Mrs Kauppi’s report because it formally calls on the European Commission to develop gender analysis and mainstreaming with regard to the impact of pension reforms on women’s lives in the European Union, with the aim of individualising pension rights, and social security and tax systems.
Having served in 1997 as rapporteur on the situation of assisting spouses of the self-employed, in small businesses and farming, I would point out that 10 years down the line we are still awaiting proposals from the Commission for strengthening the 1986 Directive and creating a European framework to give a status to assisting spouses – those tens of millions of workers who are statistically invisible, and many of whom possess no social insurance cover for illness, disability or old age, especially in the event of divorce.
I hope that the Commission will finally do its duty here and that it will follow up this resolution in practice."@en1
