".
Recent events in Burma provide unlimited proof, if such proof were needed, that democracy (with all that it implies, especially its underlying assumption, namely freedom) is what peoples aspire to. The idea that democracy is not compatible with certain peoples or geographical regions is a huge lie which even the most complacent
could barely countenance.
That said, it is clear that our statements alone do little to hasten the victory of this attempted democratic revolution. To ignore the fact that both China and Russia, on this as on other occasions, are pursuing a foreign policy which is completely incompatible with the values that we Europeans and our allies uphold, is a serious mistake.
The expansion of democracy is essential for a peaceful world and support for democratic movements, in concert with our allies, is our duty towards the values in which we believe.
Finally, I am convinced that on this, as on other occasions, it is important to understand the true geopolitical reality of the region, for fear of nurturing a perverse world order."@en1
