"Mr President, in its vote today, the European Parliament demands unfettered access for the United Nations envoy in the unfolding crisis in Burma, reversing that country’s decision to deny a visa to that envoy. There can be no moral equivalence between the visa ban on the Burmese generals and their ban on the legitimate representative of the international community. I welcome last night’s call by France to freeze assets in Burma. However, to freeze is not to disinvest and the targeted sanctions this Parliament calls for will not be realised unless assets are removed, and that includes French companies such as Total and Elf too. Finally, we not only call for protection for the protesters, but also express to them our solidarity. If this is a Saffron Revolution, we hope it will be peaceful, and in the name of human rights and democracy, we hope it will be successful."@en1
