"I voted in favour of the very sound report by my esteemed colleague Marie-Hélène Descamps on the creation of a European digital library to make our cultural and scientific heritage universally accessible in all the European languages.
As I write, I wish to pay tribute to the former French President Jacques Chirac, who – with five other European Union heads of state – took the initiative on this project in April 2005. I am glad that the European Parliament is signalling strongly to the Commission that it should make this project a priority. I am also pleased to see possible solutions emerging to the operational problems: coordination of all Europe’s existing digital libraries, public access, and cooperation with the various stakeholders in the sector, particularly writers, publishers and bookshops, for example.
This is a tool that deserves our support, for it will help to combat ignorance and thus to promote democracy, peace and prosperity. Well done, Marie-Hélène Descamps!"@en1
