"Thank you for allowing me to take the floor and thank you, Mrs Descamps, for your report, which moves forward the process of digitising libraries in the European Union. I voted to support the proposed document because the process of digitising book stocks, film recordings, and audio and video recordings currently under way in all Member States is slow and fragmented. I consider it necessary to focus attention on coordinating these national initiatives and above all on preserving digital material. At European level it is necessary to devote significant attention to preserving digital copies. The creation of a digital copy of a book or a film is not necessarily a guarantee of its long-term preservation. All digital material, whether a digitised work or original digital material, must be kept in such a way that it is permanently accessible. We have little experience of digital conservation. In the absence of a consistent strategy, mere digitisation may lead to depreciation of the investment made."@en1
