"Article 141 of the EC Treaty states that ‘Each Member State shall ensure that the principle of equal pay for male and female workers for equal work or work of equal value is applied.’ This is a very important principle and we must ensure that it is being implemented in every country. I believe the time has come to take another step forward. In Malta we have several situations in which persons, both female and male, are paid according to different rates and systems, despite the fact that they do the same work. These different payments are being justified on the basis of bureaucratic criteria, such as the year in which these persons were employed. If such discrimination occurs between two women or two men, there is no violation of the EC Treaty in its strict interpretation. Similar situations exist and are evident in the public sector and elsewhere. For this reason there is a need for both the Commission and the governments of the Member States to take new initiatives to ensure that one simple principle is applied: equal pay for equal work, whoever you may be."@en1
