"From the point of view of ensuring gender equality, I think it is vital to have comprehensive, systematic and objective information, including access to harmonised Community statistical data that are as broad and as up to date as possible. In this regard I also think the annual reports in which the Commission presents the situation of men and women are particularly important.
The Community has done a great deal to expand the legal basis for gender equality, but whether this has brought results in practice is another matter. The annual report answers this question to some extent. I think it would be important to have systematic monitoring of practical progress with the strategic targets set out in the 2006-10 Roadmap for equality between women and men, to check that Member States are implementing the legislation in practice, and to review integration of gender mainstreaming into Community policy and the gender impact of various projects.
Since the future of the European Union will largely depend on how we manage to attract more women into work, we need to devote specific, detailed and focused attention to examining women’s participation in the labour market and ways of mobilising it, to eliminating the obstacles that prevent women from finding employment, progressing in their career, or maintaining work and family life in tandem, and to examining the situation of disadvantaged women (migrants, ethnic minorities, lone parents)."@en1
