"Mr President, Commissioner, it is somewhat dispiriting to stand here and speak on a report about inequality in the European Union in 2007. It should not be needed. It should be self-evident, not least in view of the fact that the EU has a majority of women. But the sad fact is that it is needed. It is vitally important to get men out onto the field of play, to get them to score goals. Otherwise the game is lost. Here are a few passes to men: the rate of employment for women must increase. They must have the right to full-time employment and the possibility of part-time employment. The pay gap must be closed. Are women in the EU really worth
than men? Women must have a greater presence in the boardroom, in politics and in industry. Fathers must take more responsibility for the home and family and must take their share of parental leave, not least for the sake of the children.
There are many important things which Parliament has to urge the Commission and the Member States to do. Let us hope that they listen and take action!"@en1
