"Mr President, my thanks and compliments to Mrs Kauppi on her report, but I have a few points to make to the Commission. The Commission regularly pays lip service to gender equality, and has done so again today, but time and time again it has failed in practice to turn its good intentions into concrete action. Worse still, instead of taking measures which would reduce gender inequality, combat female poverty and help women resolve the day-to-day problems they encounter, the Commission’s policy frequently makes their position even more difficult.
A good example of this is ‘flexisecurity’, measures to make the laws on redundancy more flexible. If the proposals outlined by the Commission in its Green Paper are implemented it is precisely women, who all too often are employed under short-term contracts as temps and are relatively poorly paid, who will suffer. It is women, specifically, who have a lot of problems with things like building up a pension fund, health costs and juggling family care and paid work. And what does the Commission do? Instead of giving women, indeed workers in general, the certainty which would make their lives a little bit easier, the Commission proposes to create even greater uncertainty.
This report on inequality between men and women shows that major differences still persist in 2007. A much higher priority needs to be given to overcoming this, in both word and deed. Gender equality should be automatically mainstreamed into all Commission policy. I actually find it deplorable that we have to keep on reminding the Commission of the fact."@en1
