"Ladies and gentlemen, once again we are getting annoyed about statistics demonstrating that although women achieve better results, their salaries are permanently 15% lower. Yes, we have a glass ceiling and men do not like women taking up senior posts very much. Stereotypes exist and women themselves sometimes become their victims. We want to change this. However, my opinion is that if we want to change something we have to start here.
The employment statistics for the European Parliament and for the Commission clearly show that men are in an overwhelming majority when it comes to the best-paid posts. Women prevail in the lowest-paid posts. There are many highly efficient female linguists with third-level education who work here for the salary of a secretary. Their better-paid bosses have mostly two types of qualification: they are men and they have been here a long time.
Ladies and gentlemen, I am of the opinion that recommendations by the European institutions on gender issues will be taken seriously only when we carry out a thorough analysis of the relation between reward systems and people’s education and efficiency, and when human resources management and pay systems are revised. Until this happens, the citizens will see us as people who preach water and drink wine."@en1
