"Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, my congratulations to Mrs Kauppi on an important report.
Gender equality is one of the EU’s fundamental principles, as Commissioner Michel also said, but it is just one basic principle ‘on show’ in speeches and declarations such as these. In reality the EU is not very interested in equality between women and men. That was obvious in the Commissioner’s speech too. He said that the EU will do all it can. There is nothing very concrete there. What will the EU do to ensure that the directives it has adopted on equal pay and many other issues are actually implemented?
In my opinion, the EU should actually wake up to the fact that men and women should have more equal status in Europe. The EU talks a lot, but does less, and the Member States also talk a lot but do less. In fact this issue does not shake people into action, at least not the EU’s leaders. I suppose that is just as true for the top decision-makers and the labour market organisations in our own countries. There are other more important things. It is also conspicuous in the fact that the pay gap is still at a level of 15% in the EU countries generally and in my country, a pioneer in the matter of equality, it is, regrettably, 20%.
I hope the Commissioner and the Commission as a whole will one day realise and recognise the importance of this and do something about promoting the EU principle of equality between women and men. Today it is just empty words."@en1
