As draftsman for the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development, I would like to underline the importance of approving some of the proposals contained in our opinion which were not included in Mrs Kauppi’s report, and to request your support for approving them in this plenary in view of their importance for millions of women farmers and rural workers whose activities need to become more visible, through the inclusion of those women in statistics as agricultural, rather than domestic, workers.
It is vital for their legal status as women working in agriculture to be fully recognised, for equal rights and opportunities to become effective, including in social security. Motherhood must be given effective protection and there needs to be better access to healthcare, education, lifelong learning, facilities for children and families, especially nurseries, local cultural centres and markets, all of which requires more investment and better public services in rural areas. This is the only way to combat the high levels of poverty and isolation affecting women in some rural areas and to achieve better social cohesion."@en1
