"Mr President, I would like to congratulate the rapporteur on preparing a report that I hope will help to protect people from racial and ethnic discrimination as well as achieve greater success in obtaining legal redress.
We have much work to do in seeking to effectively implement the directives on ethnic and employment equality. The citizens of the EU Member States (especially the new ones) still do not know their rights; either they do not have enough time, or it is financially impossible for them to defend their rights. In the majority of countries, those suffering from discrimination do not manage to join forces and appoint more powerful associations to defend their collective rights. It is difficult to collect information on these thorny issues identifying indirect discrimination or assessing the extent of discrimination in society. Therefore, the European Commission faces problems in supervising the implementation of directives and determining the reasons for the miserable situations in which discrimination exists.
I support my colleagues’ recommendations to allocate more resources to non-governmental organisations that inform citizens and provide legal aid for the victims of discrimination. The role of the media is also very important.
Thus, I would like to address my colleagues. We all have offices in the countries in which we are elected. There we could provide and finance initial legal consultations during which people would be informed about the legal acts prohibiting discrimination and the possibilities of making use of the right of legal redress. In short, we could help people directly.
We could more actively mobilise the political will to strengthen the fight against racial discrimination and employment inequality."@en1
