"To being with, allow me to thank Mrs Buitenweg for the work she has done on this report. Allow me also to look at this issue from another angle. Increasing mobility of people is compelling us to be more open to those who come to our countries. However, this openness starts with family upbringing. It is in the family that children are most likely to learn to respect others. The family is the first community that should teach openness, respect and solidarity. Educating against racial and ethnic intolerance must become a visible pillar of all aspects of upbringing and education, both in school and society as a whole. Upbringing and education must concentrate on the ethical bases that strengthen family unity. For this reason, the issue of interaction between cultures, like that of peace and respect for diversity, have now become political and security issues of great importance. The fight against racial discrimination focuses mainly on the manner in which we wish to ensure co-existence between peoples and nations at the beginning of the new century and millennium. Naturally, some legislation is necessary, but our society should deal with racial and ethnic discrimination in such a way that we honestly assess the past and together seek a future for every human being where the dignity and intrinsic rights of each person are respected."@en1
