As the honourable Member knows, in March the Council adopted a programme which is regarded as world leading on both energy issues and climate change issues. We in the European Union will have an almost historic responsibility, I would say, at the Bali Conference, which will hopefully set new targets for CO
emissions for post-Kyoto 2012. The European Union will clearly have a responsibility to support and/or encourage the international community to set itself as ambitious targets as we have proposed for ourselves.
We therefore already have, Mr Paleckis, a highly ambitious programme to implement across the European Union. Among the specific energy issues, the issue of energy saving is on the agenda at both EU level and within the individual Member States. I can tell you that in Portugal – and I have direct experience of this – this is an extremely important issue to which we have dedicated a great deal of effort. However, the issue of investment in new energy technologies and in sciences relating to alternative energy sources has also been mentioned.
We have much to do. We hope that what we have to do can be done quickly and well. We must of course now concentrate on the ambitious programme for energy and climate change that we have agreed."@en1
