"Mr President, I wish to say a few words regarding the European Institute of Technology. Firstly, I would like to thank the rapporteur Mr Paasilinna. He has done some excellent work. I know that he is an expert in education and research and other such areas. This a very ambitious project, but I would nevertheless like to point out that if we in the European Union establish new institutions it might be very important that, before we do so, we ensure that existing institutions can obtain adequate funding. Consequently, we should also ensure that the network of universities which now exists can obtain adequate support and thereby produce new research. In the vote I voted in accordance with Mr Paasilinna’s recommendation, but I would ask Parliament to consider that existing research communities should be able to obtain their funding and that this new institute should not eat up the money set aside for them. I ask that this should be recorded and taken into account when the decisions are being taken."@en1
